First off, who is J. Benjamin?
J. Benjamin really isn’t that tough of a question to answer. J or John is my first name and Benjamin is my middle. I come from a long line of John Benjamin’s. In fact, there were five others before me according to my grandfather and one after.
I chose the name J. Benjamin for the clothing company because I wanted something that had a classic sound and would stand the test of time. When I really decided that I wanted to create a clothing company it took me about 7 years to come up with this name. You can only imagine how I felt when my “aha moment” came and I said to myself, “You’ve got to be kidding me! All these years trying to think of the best name and it’s just my name all along!”
After the name came I decided it was finally time to get the ball rolling. So, I decided the best way to jump in was to create a t-shirt business.
Now we know who J. Benjamin is but what IS J. Benjamin Clothing Co.?
J. Benjamin Clothing Co. is not as easy to answer as who is J.Benjamin. Well, I should say it wasn’t as easy to define. You kind of know what you want in your mind but that is a lot different once you actually begin to do something or even write it down. After a year of working with this company I have learned how important it is to actually define who you are and what your goal is. Of course people tell you this is important and you know you want to have that direction but sometimes it takes a little incubation time. After taking a few months off from J. Benjamin, I was really able to figure out what I wanted to get out of this dream. I was really able to see my path and direction once I took a step back.
J. Benjamin Clothing Co. is a passion, a dream, a life goal. I have had this itch to start a clothing business ever since I was in middle school. You can read my story about “Following a Passion/Dream” to see my road to this very moment. Taking a risk and following a dream is what I base the whole company on. I have said it many times before but many people have a dream as a child or teenager but give up because other people tell them their dreams are unrealistic. As a person gets older they begin to believe what others say and give up. They live without passion because they yearn for what they really want to do. They get older and think it’s too late. I believe there isn’t a deadline to start following your own dream.
J. Benjamin Clothing Co. wants to be able to inspire others to follow their dream when they come in contact with the pieces that are made. We want people to be able to say, “If he can do it then so can I!”
